30/06/2015 - Social Inclusion Week 2015

      Social Inclusion Week 2015

The official launch of Rathmullan Inclusive Playground Extension took place in conjunction with the launch of Donegal County Council’s annual Social Inclusion Week in Rathmullan by Cllr Ciaran Brogan, Cathaoirleach last Thursday.

The Rathmullan Inclusive Playground Extension was funded by Donegal County Council, the Department of Children and Youth Affairs through Capital Grant Funding Scheme for Play and Recreation 2014 and a large fundraising initiative in Rathmullan and the wider area spearheaded by Mrs Mally Standford, which has resulted in an investment of approximately €40,000 going into one of the busiest playgrounds in the county.

The extension aims to provide an area within the playground, which includes equipment that is accessible to all children, with or without disability to interact and play together. The equipment included in the extension includes bird nest swing, carousels, springers and play panels.

It is fitting that this year’s Social Inclusion week which runs from the 29th June – 3rd July was launched in conjunction with the official opening of this playground. Social Inclusion Week aims to highlight the very positive work being done not only by Donegal County Council but also by other statutory and community organisations in attempting to raise awareness of social inclusion related issues in Donegal, and this is only a snap shot of some of the activities which are taking place throughout the year.

Once again this year, Donegal County Council is leading out a number of events  which include an inclusion through sport event which will invite children from Polish and Traveller communities to participate in an inclusive football blitz at Donegal League HQ, Ballyare, Ramelton at 7pm on Wednesday evening the 1st July.

On Wednesday 1st July, in the Regional Cultural Centre (RCC) at noon, the 6th Annual ME4U awards will take place recognising the contributions of volunteers and organisations across Co. Donegal.

The Pride of Place awards will also take place in the RCC on Wednesday at 12 o’clock, which acknowledge the contributions made by community groups across Donegal.

On Friday morning 3rd July, Cllr. Ciaran Brogan, Cathaoirleach will welcome Donegal Youth Council and older people from the local community for an intergeneration day in the Council Chamber in Lifford, some of this morning will be devoted to looking at the whole area of mental health and wellbeing and the sharing of different experiences by the youth and older members of the community. There will also be an opportunity to discuss the local suicide prevention plan for the County called ‘Connect Donegal’.

Donegal Local Development Company will be leading out on a number of initiatives which include information events on SICAP – Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme.

This programme aims to tackle poverty, social exclusion and long-term unemployment through local engagement and partnership between disadvantaged individuals, community organisations, public sector agencies and other stakeholders.

Inishowen Development Partnership is also leading out on a number events which include IT programmes from beginners to more advance, Personal Development Programmes and an International Fair Trade Conference.
